Book Review #3 ~ “Parable of the Sower” by Octavia E. Butler
Octavia Butler has been an author I’ve seen regularly praised everywhere on social media and Goodreads. Finally, I read my first book of hers, “Parable of the Sower.” This book is about Lauren, who is living in a dystopian California in the 2020’s, which seems to hit maybe a little too close to home. Lauren has hyper-empathy, meaning that she feels other people’s pleasure, as well as pain. rough out this book, the reader follows Lauren from 2024-2027, as she grows up and leads a different life than expected (I don’t want to give a ton away).
I really really liked this book. I thought all of the characters were appropriately fleshed out and I think that this novel should be required reading in schools, especially with how the world is developing at our current time. I listened to some of this book on audiobook, which was a great recording.
I do recommend this book and I rated it 3.75/5 stars. The only reason I didn’t rate it a full 4 is because I didn’t like the romantic plot line in the second half of the book. This was my 70th book of 2025, I’m so close to completing the most books I ever have in a year! See you soon xx Autumn
